The Altern8 Juggling Club
#Altern8 - After a 1 month pause, Altern8 Juggling and Circus Skill Workshop is BACK with a new venue.
Thanks to the kind support of the folk at Circomedia, we are planning to start up again in the Gym at their Kingwood Foundation site.
From Monday 12th September 8pm-10pm at Circomedia, The Kingswood Foundation, Britania Road, BS15 8DB
This date is still subject to final confirmation but very likely.
The new Venue and timeslot for the Bristol Altern8 Juggling Workshop is confirmed.
The workshop will begin again next Monday at 8pm
The address is: Circomedia, The Kingswood Foundation, Britania Road, BS15 8DB.
We will be in the Gym, which is the first major building on the left side of the main cluster of buildings as you approach.
As yet I don't know if we will have tea making capability on the first night but will set about solving that problem once I see what is and is not available.
Hope to see you there!

Ian has told me that the venue will be closed on Monday 19th September so we will not be meeting then. Normal service resumes the following week (Monday 26th September).
(Our online virtual juggling club is still running on Tuesday evenings. See https://juggling.family/Altern8JugglingClub for details.)

Altern8 Juggling Workshop - WE ARE BACK from September 7th
We have the hall between 7:15pm and 9:30pm though we will need to stop around 9:20pm to packup and leave.
In good weather there is a nice grass outside space that we can use too.
The address is: St James Church Hall, Richmond Road, Mangotsfield BS16 9HA
Using that address Google Maps will show the correct location - its visible as a drive way on the opposite side of the road to all the houses.
Duck Duck Go will probably tell you it's on the other side of the road to where it actually is so, "It's behind you".
Other search engines are available but mostly a bit rubbish.
Call me on 0786 755 1327 if you have trouble finding it or if you have any questions at all or email sseic2 at hotmail dot com and I can reply with answers or full directions.
Subs will initially be £4 per person either in cash or preferably if you have a banking app paid directly to my bank account (ask me for sort code and account).
To start with I will obviously not have any change so please make an effort to have the 4 pound coins, 8 fifty pence pieces or suitable combination thereof.
There are a couple of health and safety policies in place to satisfy the hall owners and our insurers...
"All equipment to be checked for faulty parts and sharp or protruding edges before use. All unskilled and/or unexperienced participants to be supervised by skilled and experienced participants."
Not too much of a problem, I think. Just don't give a beginner some knives to juggle and then wonder off.
Covid 19 Policy
1) Mask wearing is strongly encouraged when interacting closely with those outside your own household.
2) Hand sanitiser will be available for participant use before and after each session.
3) Equipment is being passed between participants so cleaning of equipment is encouraged.
4) Personal space to be respected at all times and 2 metre distancing strongly recommended.
5) Any would be participant who experiences symptoms that could be Covid-19 or who has tested positive in the last 10 days must not attend until the NHS recommended self-isolation period is complete or a negative PCR test result is obtained.
6) For now, we ask that unvaccinated people hold off attending until they’ve completed their vaccinations.
7) For the foreseeable future, good ventilation will be a priority so windows and doors will be kept open during the workshop.

The Altern8 Virtual Juggling Club:
Tonight the Bristol jugglers (from the Monday night Altern8 juggling club) hosted our first virtual juggling club using Jitsi video conferencing.
It was really nice. Everyone grabbed a drink and/or snacks, and we sat and chatted, watched each others' cats doing silly cat things, marvelled at the occasional juggling attempt in the background, and generally chilled. We even got 'visitors' who have moved away from Bristol and were able to return due to the online nature. People dropped in and out, probably about 10-12 people most of the time.
We'll be doing it again next week.
For all other juggling clubs who have had to cancel - why not go down the same route? I can give advice on setting it up using Jitsi - it's really easy.
Or if you know us and would like to join us in our next meet-up, let me know and I'll send you a link - we could probably accommodate a few more people before it becomes unwieldy.
We've now heard that the church we rent a hall from is selling their venue due to covid-induced financial issues. So #Altern8 is now currently without a live venue.
Our online meetings continue every Monday. We'll start searching for a new venue.... when it might make sense to do so.
Newbury Juggling club (UK) is not meeting for the foreseeable future, our hall rang today to tell me they have cancelled all bookings in order to protect their elderly residents from the virus of evil. Sorry everyone!
With best wishes,
Lizzy Peat

Sucks, but I think it is for the best.
A couple of friends & I have tickets to see The Cat Empire in Brighton tonight. We've all decided not to go :(
Social distancing FTW!
As of today, Hullabaloo (Leeds Juggling Club) and Bedford Juggling Club have both closed for the foreseeable future, too.
I plan to take up tiddlywinks. Bah.

Mïark has also done a great job marking events as cancelled over the weekend. I cancelled a couple more last night after notifications from organisers. I suspect more will follow suit & more have already been cancelled but we've not heard.
I'm curious though, is there much sentiment among people that clubs & events should continue right now? There isn't among most people I know.
Personally I think we have a social responsibility to try to heed government advice which is to avoid unnecessary social contact. I hate missing the club and having to cancel but this this has not even started yet, if the models are correct in a few weeks we will Well and truly in the s**t, this situation is unprecedented and largely unknown and, until we do know more I think we have to trust the experts.. Who suddenly seem to be back in fashion!

Spinning@ are also closed for the time being.
Would it be a useful thing to have an open ended "Closed until Corona Virus risk calms down" rather than trying to guess when the club will reopen for the club listings? Or is it a lot of work for not much gain? Or do club organisers need a date so they can come back and mark their club as now open or still closed.
There are quite a few events in April just waiting to see what their government regulations/advice or venues policy is.
Guess a lot of jugglers will be practising solo skills till things clear up

York Jugglers will also be closed until this virus is over, at least we can still practise at home, there may be a huge improvement in the standard of solo juggling by the time meetings start again.

Leicester Jugglers closed for twelve weeks minimum unless we find another venue :(
Hello, Raleigh jugglers here! We welcome jugglers of all skill levels and skill and have been meeting without interruption since the early 1980s. IJA membership not required but encouraged :-)
Due to the Martin Luther King Holiday, we will be meeting January 21, 2020 (Tuesday) same time, otherwise we meet every Monday.
Hi JwW,
Welcome to Juggling Edge.
You can mark on the Juggling Edge listing for your club any weeks it will not be meeting.

Wow! That's some staying power.
That is pretty impressive, which made me wonder which was the oldest juggling club.
Only a fifth of the 955 active juggling clubs listed on Juggling Edge have given their start date (or "Established date")
The oldest is Santelli in Netherlands which was established in 1962.

Top Ten Oldest Juggling Clubs listed on Juggling Edge
Seven of the ten oldest clubs are in US, this might be due to amateur juggling clubs starting earlier in the US, US clubs being better at recording their start dates or more US clubs listing themselves on Juggling Edge.
[Incidentally, the Juggling Edge listing for North Carolina State Juggling Club says they were established in 1992 not the early 1980s - so that might need changing or the date checking.]

I'm not certain if people have been meeting at Santelli for juggling that long, I'll met a bunch of Santelli regulars last weekend but didn't know I needed to ask this, haha! Will do next time I run into them :)
It's a youth circus with a long history indeed, the date is the origin date of the youth circus.
Oops! Was looking at the wrong data.

Hmm, the established date of #Altern8 seemed to have disappeared. I've just put it back (year only). Should this date be visible on the club's page? 'Cos it's not.
#Altern8 club is havng a free night on Dec 23rd, all welcome.

Last night there were hats, staffs, a spinning sword, clubs, balls and a kendama. And, of course, tea and biscuits.#Altern8 #juggling club. A posh biscuit night. Allegedly. Also, FREE night on Dec 23rd! https://t.co/FJ11SYHmiD pic.twitter.com/ENw8hz5paS

Surprises at #Altern8. After having a short-notice ninja comedy gig on "the wrong day" on Saturday, last night we had a surprise visit from an erstwhile God Emperor. Next week we are closed due to the shock of it all. (Well, okay, actually because a good propotion of us will be at #Broxford2018.) Back to our version of normal on Sept 24th.Unexpected comedy gig organisation with 2hrs notice? No problem! @MitchBenn rocked the hall (& the pub). 13 satisfied ninja-gig punters. :-) pic.twitter.com/JhlnDMTCTW
