Caleb -

Hey everybody. My name is Caleb. I live in California. I love ball juggling and have since I was in sixth grade. I really got into club juggling before my shoulder surgery in July. I had my right arm in a sling for a couple months, so I was trying to get three clubs with one hand down. Unfortunately I have a set of solid one-piece plastic clubs, which would absolutely kill my hand when they hit wrong. So I put down the clubs with plans on buying some more user friendly ones. I got to play around with some Renegades not too long ago and it was hard to walk away without them, Haha. I was wondering what some experienced jugglers thought about the difference between 85mm and 95mm? I know there's probably not that much of a difference but I thought somebody might have some light to shed on the matter.
Also, thanks for having me, haha.

Hi Caleb, welcome to the Edge.
IMHO, 95s are the way to go with Renegades. They just look so much better. I've used them for 8 years now, no regrets.

Hi Caleb thanks for joining us.

The larger 95mm clubs will look better when juggled. I think you only really need to think about 'slim' clubs if you are going to be doing 6+.

If you are having problems with your shoulder though I can't help but think that Renegades might not be the best choice because they are generally on the heavy side. Although I see on their website that Renegade offer a 3/4" dowel which makes a club that is only 0-15 grams heavier than a PX3 (which is a light club).

Out of interest what make are your current one piece clubs?

Ok, cool. Thanks for the help. I was also wondering about the length of the club. Are there any advantages to getting a shorter handle? I'd never looked at what brand they were until just now, haha. They are Dubes.

Caleb,

Shorter handles affect the spin of the club, but really the biggest advantage is if you aren't very tall and start working on body throws. I'm 5 foot 3 inches and if I use a regular sized (20 1/4") European club when I'm working on body throws, they always catch the ground. I use 19 1/2" 95mm Renegades. When I am passing, I have 6 105mm Renegades (standard length). Those are very visible to the audience.

As to the 95mm vs 85mm, as everyone has said, the 95s are prettier. But if you're working on 3 in one hand and are aspiring to 6-7 clubs, then the 85s have the advantage of giving you more room for error. The 95s are Renegade's original size and were used by Anthony Gatto, but later in his career he switched to 85s.

They will fit in a smaller space. Shorter handles are better for Alberts & Treblas but worse for kickups, flourishes & handrolls. It's easier to adapt your technique for the latter than the former!

Wow, I'm so glad I stumbled on this forum. You all know what your talking about. I've been trying to decide for a few months at this point. I think I've got it pretty figured out now. I'm glad to see you guys like Renegades. I was thinking about some M8's or Delphins possibly. But I've been to the shop in Santa Cruz and the guy is pretty cool, so it'll be nice to support the Cali brand. Thank you all for the help.
